DIRECTIONS FOR JULY'S MYSTERY BOX - SAILBOAT PAPER PIECE PATTERN

We designed this pattern in a 4-inch block or a 6-inch block.  If this is your first paper piece experience, start with the big one.

PREP WORK:

  1. Cut out your pattern lettered sections (A, B, C) with 1/4 to 1/2 inch of paper surrounding the EXTERIOR solid line (cut just outside the dotted line)
  2. Use sharp edge of ruler to crease paper patterns on INTERIOR solid lines for easy folding.
  3. Grab your fabric choices and rough cut the pieces about an inch larger than your pattern sections.  To do this, place the WRONG side of the pattern to the WRONG side of your fabric and trace widely around the section you are trying to measure.
  4. Set stitch length on your machine to 1.8
  5. Grab section A materials and let’s get started!

SEWING THE FIRST TWO PIECES

  1. The paper pattern and Fabric 1 are placed WRONG SIDES TOGETHER

To do this:

• Place fabric number 1 wrong side up on the table
• Place your pattern wrong side down on top of your fabric, so section 1 is completely encompassed by fabric 1. (at least ½ inch all around)
• Pin (do not sew) through paper and fabric

  1. Fold paper pattern on 1 –> 2 line, so you are now looking at the back of section 2 on your paper pattern
  2. Fabric number 2 is placed RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER underneath fabric number 1

To do this:

• Place fabric number 2 right side up on table
• Place your pattern/fabric 1 bundle on top of your fabric so:
             - Fabric 1 and fabric 2 are right sides together
             - Section 2 is completely encompassed by fabric 2

YOUR PAPER SHOULD STILL BE FOLDED SO YOU ARE LOOKING AT THE BACK OF SECTION 2.

  1. Unfold the pattern paper only and sew on 1 –> 2 line.  Start one or two stitches before the line and finish one or two stitches after the line
  2. Refold paper pattern on same 1 -> 2 line so you are once again looking at the back of section 2
  3. Trim excess seam allowance down to ¼ inch
  4. Unfold paper AND unfold fabric 2 and press

MOVING ON THROUGH THE REST OF THE PIECES OF THE PATTERN

  1. Fold paper over on lower number* –> 3 line.  Place fabric 3 right sides together with previous pieces, completely encompassing section 3.

Remember:

• You are looking at the back of section 3 on your paper pattern and
• Fabric 3 goes right side up UNDERNEATH everything you have already attached.

  1. Unfold paper and sew line lower number* –> 3
  2. Refold paper pattern so you are looking at the back of section 3 and trim
  3. Unfold fabric and paper and press
  4. ETC…

*You will always be working between the next number in your sequence and a lower one.
   The lower number* –> 3 line could be 1 -> 3 or 2 -> 3.  It will never be 4 -> 3.

JOINING LETTERED SECTIONS

Once your A, B, C sections are complete, trim ¼ inch outside of the exterior solid line (on the dotted line).  Use pins to align right sides together of sections A and B and sew along the solid lines to form your block.  Press, then align and attach section C in the same manner.

COMPLETING BLOCKS

Trim entire block ¼ inch outside of exterior solid line.

HOW TO USE YOUR SAILBOAT BLOCKS

Add sashing and borders to create a four-boat pillow cover, or make coasters for summertime vibes!  You could use them as cornerstones on the border of a quilt, or use one as the center piece of a wonky log cabin pattern.  The opportunities are boundless.  Be sure to share your creations with us!  And as always, hop on in to the shop for extra help if you need it.  Happy sewing!
