It's All Fun and Games... Improv Piecing with Traditional Quilt Blocks

Do you ever get frustrated by your points getting cut off in your quilt blocks? Do you want to pull out your hair whenever the seams don’t line up? All that hard work—and agonizing precision—was for naught! Would you believe us that the cure to these quilting woes is not just-right cutting, 50-weight thread, or special ironing methods? Rather, it’s something totally unexpected, a tool that is almost guaranteed to make you a better quilter: improvisational quilting.

Improvisational quilting is a technique that is based on freedom. There are no rules here: simply choose fabrics that call out to you and start creating a quilt block out of them; no plan is required, and you can add lines, curves, triangles, or anything else that you want. We know—this sounds harder than achieving perfect points, doesn’t it? Making quilt blocks without a pattern? That’s craziness! We promise that it’s more attainable than it seems. The entire goal of improv quilting (as the cool kids call it) is to teach you to go with where your quilt takes you. This doesn’t mean that straight lines, perfect points, and precise 1/4” seams aren’t welcome. It simply means that, should you NOT have precision in every stitch, you can pivot and find a workaround instead. This liberating thinking removes the stress in quilting, making way for some very unique creations!

Want to give improv quilting a shot? Sign up for the It’s All Fun And Games With Improv Piecing Class! In the immersive lesson, we’ll take the basic principles of improv quilting and use them to make traditional quilt blocks. Along the way, you’ll explore fabric and color selection, arrange layouts, and take creative decisions in your stitching. Remarkably, the class will help you transform into a great problem-solver who’s capable of navigating through any type of quilting scenario. In turn, this ability to improvise will level-up your precision piecing skills, making way for effortless matching seams, points, and anything else that your quilty heart desires.
