Fall 2024 Intermediate Homeschool Series

Welcome to our Fall 2024 Intermediate Homeschool Series! Over the course of the series’ four classes, students will explore a wide variety of sewing principles as they make two exciting projects: pajama pants and an adorable animal plushie.

In making the pajama pants project, students will explore important garment-making principles. Students are going to learn how to read a pattern, take body measurements to correctly size their pants, and construct their project with quilt-cotton fabric, elastic, twill tape, and ribbon embellishments. When we’ve finished the pants, we’ll move on to the second project of the semester, an animal plushie*. With tight curves, small pieces, and even some hand-sewing elements, the plushie is a more intermediate-level project than the pajama pants, but kids are sure to welcome the healthy sewing challenge all the same.

It’s going to be a fun semester full of learning and creativity!

*At the beginning of the series, students will be able to vote for the plushie that they would like to make. We’ll have several animal options to choose from.

Class Structure
The Fall 2024 Intermediate Homeschool Series consists of four, two-hour classes. There is an additional make-up day at the end so that students can catch-up on a project; however, if all students are on track with their projects by the end of the fourth class, attendance for the make-up day is not required.

Class Outline
• August 20 - Pajama Pants
Topics Covered: Review the pajama pants pattern; cut out the pattern and fabric; begin constructing the project

• September 10 - Pajama Pants
Topics covered: Finish making the pajama pants; attach elastic to the waist; use decorative elements to embellish the pants

• October 15 - Animal Plushie
Topics covered: Review the plushie pattern; cut out the pattern; determine design layout; begin constructing the plushie

• November 12 - Animal Plushie
Topics Covered: Finish constructing the plushie, work with 3-D elements in the project (such as ears and tails); embellish the plushie with buttons

• November 19 - Make-Up Day
Topics Covered: This is a make-up day to ensure that all students are on the same track with their projects at the end of the series. If everyone has finished their project by this date, attendance for this class is not required.

Materials
Students can purchase the materials for the project separately. As part of the series, most of these supplies can be purchased from our store at a 20% discount.

Pajama Pants Project
We will provide twill tape and elastic. Additionally, please purchase these materials:

•Two yards of fabric - Please pre-wash the fabrics before the start of the first class.

Animal Plushie
We will provide buttons. Additionally, please purchase these materials:

•Plushie pattern
•Fabrics - After students decide which plushie pattern we’ll make for the class, we’ll give the parents a more detailed list of the required fabrics.

Experience Level & Age Eligibility
Students should be at least 8 years old in order to attend this class. Additionally, students should have previous sewing experience so that they can keep up with the advanced techniques that we’ll cover throughout the series.
