Star Flower Quilt For National Sew A Jelly Roll Day!

A whole day dedicated to jelly rolls? That’s our jam!
National Sew A Jelly Roll Day, which happens on the third Saturday of September, celebrates all things jelly rolls. These glorious bundles of fun are composed of 40 strips, each one measuring 2.5” W x 42” L. They’re excellent for making quilts and other creative projects! Want to get the entire fabric collection but don’t have room for it all, or are you simply overwhelmed with choosing the best fabric for projects? A jelly roll is the answer as it allows you to sample an entire collection (read: you’ll have a perfectly coordinated project!) without a having to buy stacks and stacks of fabric. And you know how cutting is always the worst part about making a quilt? Because all of the strips are precut, you can get right to the good part (i.e: sewing) a lot quicker if you use a jelly roll.
Versatile and convenient — that’s how jelly rolls roll! There is, however, a lot more to them than meets the eye. At Sew Sew’s 2024 Sew A Jelly Roll Day, you’ll work intimately with the beloved precut as you discover some of its secrets. Did you know that there’s a correct way to cut each strip? Where is the edge of a jelly roll strip, on the peaks or on the valleys? Steam or no steam? We’ll reveal it all in this lesson!
Okay, but when can we start cutting into a jelly roll? Right now! We’ll be making the “Star Flower” quilt by Moda Fabrics in this lesson. With nine vibrant star blocks and a colorful pieced border, this gorgeous quilt will have everyone jelly of your mad quilting skills.
Beginners and seasoned quilters alike, we think you’re definitely ready for this jelly!
Project Details & Class Structure
This is a workshop-style class. Students will learn how to make one block during the first part of the class. After constructing the first block, students will have time to piece more blocks during the day at their own pace. The quilt measures 66" x 66", and has nine blocks in total and a pieced border. You won't finish the project during the workshop, but you'll have the necessary skills to be able to complete it at home.
Feel free to come and go as you please, especially around lunchtime. Please bring your lunch so that you can enjoy it as you make your quilt.
