Face Your Fears: All The Scary Things BOM Series

Bias edges. Y seams. Curves. Bulky intersections. Oh, the horror!

Wait - don’t go running just yet! This BOM (block-of-the-month) series will make these feared quilting techniques approachable and 100% attainable!

Gain an impressive set of quilting skills as you piece four, 22” square blocks from the series’s featured pattern, “Neptune Star”. Each block of this modular, intermediate-level pattern features a brilliant, beautiful star; they’re made even more unique by the five center squares in the middle of each piece, allowing for endless design possibilities. The blocks are traditional with a modern twist, and they highlight Y-seams, curves, bias edges, and bulky intersections. Scary, right? Not so much. The magic of the pattern is that it teaches you how to successfully tackle these tricky principles without breaking a sweat. How? We’ll use freezer paper to cut out pattern pieces, discuss fabric preparation techniques to help with bias edges, practice special pressing techniques, and more. Fabric will be just as important as block construction itself, so before we dive into any kind of sewing, we’ll dedicate one class to discuss fabric and color choices.

Series Structure
This is a five-part series. Students will make one block in each of the four classes after the first lesson.

Please note: The “Neptune Star” quilt pattern has nine blocks in total, but we will only be making four during this BOM series. This will result in a 44” x 44” quilt (approximately). Students will have the necessary skills to be able to make the five other blocks after this BOM series is over. Refer to the picture here to see what these blocks will look like!

Prologue: Getting Ready To Quilt (August 15)

Month One - Fussy Cut Block (August 22)

Month Two - Flying Geese Block (September 19)

Month Three - Starburst Block (October 17)
Featured Techniques:
• Sew and flip technique
• Foundation paper piecing with freezer paper

Month Four - Quarter Circles Block (November 14)
• Pinless quarter circles
• Color transparency

Materials

The class includes these materials:

Please purchase these materials:
You will need to provide eight fat quarters to make each block. For the four blocks, you will need a total of 32 fat quarters. These fabrics can be purchased at our store for 20% off.

***A NOTE ABOUT PURCHASING FABRICS*** Please don't purchase fabrics until after the first class. The first lesson will cover fabric preparation techniques so that you can choose the correct fabric and prepare it accordingly so that you can "control" the bias edges. You will, however, need to purchase your fabrics before the second class because you'll need to prewash them.

Experience Level
This is an intermediate-level class. Students must have basic sewing skills and feel comfortable using a rotary cutter with a ruler. They should have made at least one quilt prior to class to ensure they are comfortable with intermediate skills.
