Shopping for Beginner Sewing Machines at
Sew Sew Studio - Bogart, GA and Duluth, GA
Modern sewing machines are significantly more advanced than their predecessors (remember your Grandmother’s old Singer?). Today there are many different brands of machines offering a wide range of features that make sewing faster, easier, and more precise. Computerized sewing machines with hundreds of stitches, automated settings, loads of sewing machine accessories, and even embroidery capabilities are commonplace.
But while all the advancements in technology are enticing for a sewing hobbyist, we often serve customers that need to start with a basic sewing machine at an entry-level price.
Buying a basic sewing machine is a smart choice for beginners or casual sewists who want to learn the craft without feeling overwhelmed by too many features. These machines are typically more affordable, user-friendly, and are quite durable - making them ideal for mastering essential skills like threading, straight stitching, hemming, and simple garment construction. With fewer settings and buttons, you can focus on building confidence rather than troubleshooting complex functions. Basic machines also tend to be lighter and more portable, perfect for taking to classes or sewing groups. And because they’re mechanically simpler, they often require less maintenance and are easier to fix if something goes wrong.
This guide will walk us through some important features to consider when shopping for a basic sewing machine at Sew Sew Studio.
And don’t worry – every machine purchase at Sew Sew Studio comes with complimentary owner lessons, so you’ll have a place to go as you get to know your new machine!

Built-in stitches on a sewing machine are pre-programmed stitch patterns that the machine can sew automatically at the push of a button or turn of a dial. These include:
- Straight stitch – the most basic, used for seams and topstitching
- Zigzag stitch – flexible and great for stretch fabrics or finishing raw edges
- Buttonhole stitch – creates even, secure buttonholes in just a few steps
- Stretch stitches – special patterns that move with knit fabrics
- Decorative stitches – ornamental patterns like flowers, hearts, or scallops for embellishment
- Overlock-style stitches – heavier weight fabrics with larger fibers that easily fray. For this, you’ll want an overcast or overlock stitch
The number of built-in stitches on a sewing machine varies by model—basic machines might have 10–20, while advanced or computerized ones can have hundreds. Having a range of built-in stitches gives you more creative and practical options as you progress on your sewing journey.
So, ask yourself: What will I be using my sewing machine for now, and what would I like to use it for in the future? If you want to use your sewing machine for making or mending clothes, quilting, and maybe creating home decor items, you’re going to need specific built-in stitches in your beginner machine.

Built-In Needle Threader
An indispensable feature for those of us with maturing eyesight, a machine needle threader can save time and frustration. An automatic needle threader (or built-in needle threader) is a lever that brings the thread through a sewing machine needle for you, so that you never have to lick the end of a thread or squint your eyes!
Top Loading Drop-in Bobbin

Many of today's sewing machines boast a drop-in or top-loading bobbin. This advancement in sewing machine design allows you to see how much thread remains on your bobbin, and is easier to master than the front-loading bobbin.

Computerized Sewing Machines with LED Screen

For some users, computerized sewing machines can be easier to control and learn. For others, mechanical machines are similar to those they grew up sewing on and feel more familiar. There are a few advantages worth considering when investing in a computerized sewing machine.
- Needle stop positioning – when you lift your foot from the foot pedal of a mechanical sewing machine, the needle stops moving up and down. To release your fabric from the machine, or to pivot your project to sew in a new direction, you need to reach over to the hand wheel and finish the rotation of the needle to it’s highest or lowest position. On a computerized sewing machine, the needle automatically stops in the highest or lowest position (depending on your setting) for an easy transition. You’ll also have a needle up/down button to raise or lower your needle, eliminating the need to manually manipulate the handwheel.
- Speed Control Slider - This feature is especially helpful for beginners learning to manage sewing speed. While most machines use a foot pedal, models with a speed control slider offer added flexibility and control. You can set a maximum speed using the slider, so even if you press the pedal all the way down, the machine won’t go faster than the selected limit. This makes it easier to sew slowly and steadily—ideal for small seams, detailed projects, or long sewing sessions when your foot needs a break from constant pressure.

Buttonhole Functions

Buttons are essential for making wearable garments and can also be used decoratively on pillows, bags, and other accessories. Our beginner sewing machine lineup includes machines that are capable of one-step and four-step buttonholes. So, what’s the difference?
One-step buttonhole machines are totally automatic. The machine creates the entire buttonhole without stopping, and you can be sure that the buttonhole is symmetrical and that the button will fit snugly.
Four-step buttonhole machines are also automatic, but require the seamstress or whoever is operating the machine to turn the stitch selector knob a couple of times as you move through the steps in creating the buttonhole. Adding additional steps can sometimes result in buttonholes that look less consistent. A one-step buttonhole machine is also faster at completing the task, so if you’re looking to get into garment construction, a one-step buttonhole would probably be the right choice for you.
