Camp Sew Sew: An Untraditional Quilt Retreat!
We’re hosting a (slightly untraditional) quilt retreat: Camp Sew Sew!
After months of planning (and years in the making), we are so excited to tell you about Camp Sew Sew, a creative camp for quilters! At this adult-only creative camp, you'll be able to make three incredible projects, take part in artistic endeavors, enjoy the company of fellow quilters and sewists, and, most importantly, have fun!
We've packed A LOT into this exciting event. These are the things you need to know.
--- Dates ---
Camp Sew Sew will take place on October 13 through October 15 at our store. This is the schedule:
Friday, October 13
3 to 8 PM: Icebreaker, ice-dyeing fabric for the camp's featured art quilt project, pizza night, and barn quilt painting at Twisted Moon Studios.
Saturday, October 14
9 AM to 12 PM: Begin working on the art quilt projects. Door prizes giveaways will start this morning.
12 to 2 PM: Lunch break
2 to 5 PM: Add the finishing touches to art quilts, Maker's Market, and shop 'til you drop session!
Sunday, October 15
1 to 5 PM: Small project using Moda's Cake Mix and show & tell/superlatives ceremony of everyone's art quilts.
--- Materials ---
The price for Camp Sew Sew includes ALL materials, a Sew Sew Studio goodie bag, and pizza for Friday night. Your goodie bag will be full of our favorite sewing items; you'll also get 20% off every* item from our store that can fit inside your goodie bag.
*Almost every item - Machines are excluded from this offer.
---Who Can Attend? ---
If you love to create, you can attend! Although the camp's projects feature quilting, they're very creative and flexible, so you'll be able to enjoy ALL of the projects. Please keep in mind that this event is ONLY for adults.

Art Quilt - This is the camp's featured project. We'll start working on the quilts on Friday and conclude the camp with a lively art quilt show & tell/superlatives ceremony.

Barn Quilt Painting - We’ll visit Twisted Moon Studios to paint a 17” x 17” barn quilt. It'll be the perfect addition to your sewing room!
Moda's Cake Mix - Before we head home, we’ll “bake” one last quilty creation on Sunday morning with Moda’s Cake Mix.
--- The fun doesn't stop there... ---
Maker's Market - We invited some of our customers to sell their handmade goods at Camp Sew Sew as part of our first-ever Maker's Market. This will be a wonderful way to start crossing things off your holiday gift list while supporting small, locally owned businesses.
Door Prizes - You'll have many chances to win door prizes after competing in the camp’s various contests. (All those Wonder Clips could be yours if you guess how many are in the jar! 👀)
Show & Tell/Superlatives Ceremony - On Sunday, camp participants will award superlatives to every art quilt. Any kind, encouraging, or supportive superlative is welcome. It'll be an uplifting ending to the incredible weekend!
The first picture that you see here is an example of ice-dyed fabric, which you'll try on October 13. Doesn't the tie-dye effect look incredible? This will be the foundation for your art quilt; it can become your background or you can incorporate it into your design, just as it was included on the snail in the second picture.
---What's an art quilt? ---
An art quilt doesn’t feature the traditional piecing techniques that "normal" quilts do. Instead, YOU get to choose what’s going to appear on your quilt. (It’s like having a blank canvas!) This is how you go about making one:
- Ice-dye a piece of solid white fabric. With this unique technique, the dye will distribute slowly into the fabric, giving it a unique tie-dye effect. (See the second picture.)
- Start thinking of the artwork that’s going to appear on your quilt. You can take inspiration from anywhere — family portraits, favorite places, memorable movie scenes, or anything else that you cherish.
- Once you’ve decided on your artwork, you’ll use scrap fabrics, buttons, and many other materials to bring your idea to life. The ice-dyed fabric from Step 1 will become your quilt’s background, but you can also incorporate it into your actual design. (See first picture.)
- Use a sewing machine to add an artistic flair to your piece. You can play with decorative stitches, thread painting, and more. Of course, no quilt top would be complete without batting and backing; sew the three layers together to complete your quilt.
